Kolton White is spending the week at the fifth annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo in Gallup, N.M. competing in Boy’s Break-A-Way Roping.
White, a sixth-grade student at Roxton Junior High School, earned the state title in Boy’s Break-A-Way Roping earlier this month in Gonzales, Texas. A break away roper catches a calf in a timed event but does not dismount and tie the calf as in tie-down roping.
Kolton competed in the first of two guaranteed heads late this morning in Gallup. His next ride in the arena will be Friday night. Placing well in these two competitions will put him in the running for the national title on Saturday.
Kolton was voted a delegate to represent the State of Texas during the competition in Gallup.
“He’s a go getter,” said his mother, Julie White. “He gets involved and doesn’t like to sit on the fence.” Kolton recently earned All Around Champion in the Region 4 2009 Texas Wrangler Junior High Division.
Kolton also is director of bull riding in Gallup. This requires him to be present, in the arena, at all bull riding performances.
“Kolton is a liaison between the students and the judges. He speaks to the judges on behalf of participants,” his mother said.
“This circuit really prepares them for the future,” she said. “It provides a lot of life experiences and he makes a lot of friends.”
The national junior high finals rodeo pulls in contestants from 47 states, Canadian provinces and Australia, making it the world’s largest junior high rodeo, according to a press release from the WJHFR. In addition to a title, Kolton is competing for a share in more than $50,000 in college scholarships.
Kolton traveled to Gallup with his father, Rodney White. His sister, 16-year-old Katie, and her mother stayed in Paris so Katie could attend her own rodeo competition this week.
