PJC to receive teacher salary stimulus funds

Published October 27, 2009

Paris Junior College is to receive a piece of $15 million in federal stimulus funds split between the 50 community colleges in Texas.

The PJC Board of Regents approved a resolution Monday to use the college’s $143,684 share toward paying two full-time faculty and 30 part-time faculty.

As part of the application process through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the college is required to submit a plan of how the funds will be used, explained John Eastman, vice president of business services.

“One of the allowable expenses was that we could pay for existing instructional staff, and so we pay two full-time people $100,000 and about 30 part-time people to expend $143,000,” Eastman said. “But in order for us to submit, obviously we have to spend the money first, then ask them to reimburse us, even though it’s in our budget.”

Derald Bulls, director of Institutional Development/Alumni Association, gave the regents a report on upcoming homecoming activities for the college, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7. This will be the college’s 85th homecoming. Saturday’s activities are capped off with the Lady Dragons and Dragons basketball games in the Hunt Center that evening.

The homecoming parade and president’s reception will be held Nov. 6, followed by the annual alumni luncheon.

Charles “Red” Scott, a 1947 graduate of PJC, will be honored as this year’s distinguished alumnus.

The regents heard an in-depth report on recruiting activities from Sheila Reece, admissions director. PJC has recently made a priority to have recruiters and counselors present in area high schools, and the presence of PJC faculty is paying off for the college, Reece said.

The college has been allowed a presence in 25 of 28 high schools in the college’s district to make presentations, answer questions and help with the financial aid application process.

The regents also agreed to set the tuition rate for continuing education at $56.12, per the recommendation of John Spradling, vice president of workforce development.

In other business the council:

•Approved a 2010-2011 college calendar that coincides with local high school and Texas A&M University-Commerce schedules; and

•heard an update on the residence hall progress from Dr. Pam Anglin, PJC president.
