What would be best

Published October 21, 2009

Lamar County residents will be voting on Constitutional Amendments on Nov. 3 with early voting beginning Monday, Oct. 19.

I am here giving my personal politically conservative opinions on what would be best for Lamar County, and not the opinion of any organization. I will give brief reasons for my opinion on each Amendment.

Amendment 1. Neutral. It allows cities or counties to tax themselves, and that is up to each county.

Amendment 2. Yes. This helps some people to continue living in their homestead.

Amendment 3, No. The state having more control over appraisals will increase costs, and therefore more taxes. This should be a county matter.

Amendment 4. Neutral. The legislature already controls the funding and this would continue, and does not affect Lamar County directly.

Amendment 5. No. The county appraiser has enough rules and regulations to deal with now.

Amendment 6. Yes. This home loan program is one benefit for our veterans that should be stabilized.

Amendment 7. Yes. One should be able to be a member of the State Guard.

Amendment 8. Yes. Some areas such as South Texas need to have treatments for veterans closer to home.

Amendment 9. No. The state already has the power to take a home that winds up on the beach, after a storm. This is overkill.

Amendment 10. Yes. It does make sense for one to have time to learn his job before being replaced.

Amendment 11. Yes. We should protect private property owner’s rights as much as possible. For more information about these amendments, the Paris Public Library has a Non-Partisan Voters Guide available for free.
