One in every three

Published October 20, 2009

First, I would like to say that I truly admire the courage and strength of the young woman on the front page of the Oct. 6 paper who is suffering from “domestic abuse.”

I know how hard it is to stand up and admit what is going on. Regardless of what some may think, most women who are abused do not “ask for it,” or “bring it upon themselves.”

In some countries, more women die from abuse suffered at the hands of a husband or boyfriend than from cancer, malaria, car accidents, and war combined each year. Some statistics say one in every three women will be abused during her lifetime. As the mother of three daughters, the odds are not good. The most common age for this abuse is 15-44 years of age.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please take a moment to think of the women in your life and consider the odds. This is an epidemic which has been allowed to continue for far too long.

To the young lady on the front page, you have the strength to remove yourself from this situation. There are many others who know what you are going through. Think of those who love you and the pain they would feel if you were to go back one time too many. The next time could be “one time too many.”
