Published July 22, 2009

Jesse Paul Collier, 35, of Neosha, Mo., died Tuesday shortly before 10 a.m. when his semi-truck left the east bound side of U.S. 271 and struck a tree about two miles south of Powderly.

The truck caught fire and completely burned, according to Department of Public Safety reports. Collier was pronounced dead at the scene by Lamar County Justice of the Peace Ernie Sparks.

DPS troopers, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Paris Fire Department, multiple area volunteer fire departments and Paris Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the accident.

Another accident took place early today when a vehicle driven by Savannah Chambers, heading east bound on Loop 286, struck a Lamar County Precinct 1 pickup truck driven by David Merritt.

Chambers was turning left onto Haybarn Road to the west of the new Paris High School site when the two vehicles collided.

Both drivers were transported to Paris Regional Medical Center south campus with undetermined injuries shortly before 7:30 a.m.
