Homecoming has Region XIV volleyball tourney

Published November 3, 2009

Homecoming activities for Paris Junior College this weekend include the Region XIV volleyball tournament at Hunt Center.

This is the first time PJC has hosted the tournament and the school won’t have the opportunity to host it for another six years. The Lady Dragons play Blinn College at 5 p.m. and Panola plays Navarro at 7 p.m. Friday. The winners of those matches face off in the Hunt Center at 2 p.m. Saturday for the Region XIV championship.

“We hope everyone will come out to the 5 p.m. game on Friday at the Hunt Center and support the Lady Dragons,” Dr. Pamela Anglin, PJC president, said. “Fans play a bigger role in volleyball than in any other sport I’ve ever seen and can make or break a team’s momentum. I encourage you to attend and bring your friends and family.”

The weekend’s homecoming activities will give attendees an opportunity to reflect on PJC’s 85 years of service to this region and acknowledge those alumni, former students and friends who have been part of PJC’s lineage.

“We will use this weekend to celebrate 85 years of accomplishments of alumni, former students and the growth PJC has experienced in recent years,” said Derald Bulls, PJC director of institutional development/alumni association. “During this celebration we will honor a distinguished alumnus, Charles ‘Red’ Scott, remember former students during the memorial service, celebrate with the Class of ’59 during their reunion and recognize the ’59 Dragon Baseball team, which won the NJCAA National Championship. We want everyone to come join the fun, so we’ve extended the registration deadline to Nov. 3.”

The 85th homecoming spans Nov. 5-7, and kicks off with the annual parade at 4 p.m. Thursday. The President’s Reception on Friday in the McLemore Student Center cafeteria has been moved to 6:30 p.m. to accommodate the 5 p.m. volleyball tournament game. The evening concludes with a production of Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” at 7 p.m. in the Karrer Theatre.

Saturday’s packed schedule starts with the Alumni and Friends business meeting at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria, reunion groups meeting at 10 a.m. in Room 205 in the Student Center, the Distinguished Alumni luncheon honoring Charles “Red” Scott at the Student Center ballroom at noon (video presentation), the 1959 NJCAA Baseball Team Reunion at the Hub Hollis Field at 2 p.m., the Lady Dragons basketball team at 4 p.m. and Dragons at 6 p.m. with the Homecoming King and Queen crowned at halftime, and a repeat performance of “Private Lives” at 7 p.m. in the Karrer Theatre and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets for the Region XIV Championship volleyball tournament are $10 for tournament pass, $6 for adults, $5 for college students without IDs and $3 for children 12 and over. There is no charge for college students with ID, children under 12 and adults 65 and over.
