Bidders help raise $35k for NL scholarships

Published October 6, 2008

The North Lamar Education Foundation raised $35,000 for scholarships at its annual fund-raising event on Saturday at the Love Civic Center. Supporters filled the civic center and bid on live auction items ranging from naming a street on the North Lamar campus to vacation get-a-ways to autographed sports memorabilia.

Top bidders were the Drake family who paid $1,000 to name a street on the North Lamar campus and $1,525 for a week condo stay in Driggs, Idaho. Carl Miller gave $1,200 for a 46” LCD TV donated by Bobby Smallwood, Sanitation Solutions was highest bidder at $1,250 for a twelve-month Thursday night dinner for two at 24th Street Cafe, and Superintendent James Dawson paid $1,000 for a computer donated by Professional Business Systems.

Once again Randy Stephens won the bid for a signed 2008 Panther football helmet while James Dawson left with an autographed football and photo by Dan Marino. Nicole and Van Neilson battled to win the Dallas Maverick’s get-a-way package, a men’s diamond ring left on the hand of Brad Scott, and Guaranty Bond Bank will receive a pie every month for a year from Sandwiches, Etc. NLISD school board president Gary Hilliard showed his support for NLEF by winning a barbecue dinner for 20 donated by Doug Kelley and Williams Sporting Goods and a seven nights stay at Los Lagos in Hot Springs that was donated by Dawson and his wife, Rozann.

Proceeds from the live and silent auctions totaled $18,000. Sponsorships, donations, and ticket sales totaled approximately $17,000.

Other than shopping in the silent auction, a good number of the ticket holders were drawn to the night’s entertainment of “Americas Got Talent” runner-up and former North Lamar student, Cas Haley. The rock and reggae style vocal guitarist captured the audience’s attention with his original style of melodic arrangements and lyrics.

Patti Haley and Lori Malone were each recognized for being named NLISD Secondary and Elementary Teachers of the Year, respectively. Other teachers in the district recognized were Marion Hutchison, Jennifer McEwin, Marla Sessums and Joey Musgrove.

North Lamar supporter and live auction spotter Don Stuckey, won $750 cash after his card was drawn last from a blue and red deck of cards. Cards were purchased at the beginning of the night for $20 each and card holders were randomly eliminated throughout the night.

Established in 1998 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, NLEF was formed to inform parents and students of the benefits of obtaining an education at the next level. As a parent, grandparent, property owner, or business owner, the on-going involvement and support are vital.

Contributions made to the foundation provide an integral link to the quality of education students can receive after high school. Scholarships may be used at community colleges, colleges, universities, and vocational and technical schools.

Contributions to the North Lamar Education Foundation may be given through general donations, memorials, honorariums, fund-raisers, endowments, and planned giving. All donations are tax deductible.

Donations are accepted year round and may be sent to the North Lamar Education Foundation at 3201 Lewis Lane, Paris, Texas 75460.
