Right-of-way changes announced

Published July 23, 2009

Lamar Electric Cooperative will soon have contractors cutting electric line right-of-ways north of Clarksville.

Tree’s Inc., headquartered in Houston, was the low bidder for clearing a main three phase line along Texas 37, starting three miles north of the Clarksville bypass to Caddo Crest Fish Farms.

Whitmire Line Clearance from Pilot Point was the low bidder for clearing line in the Kiomatia area, primarily along CR 2368, CR 2356, and FR 410 North. Both companies should start work in the next week and hope to be finished in these areas by November.

In the past, the Coop has waited till tree limbs got near the electric lines and only trimmed the tallest limbs. This process has resulted in the same trees being trimmed every 2 to 3 years, a costly program in the long run says Coop operations manager Barry Murchison,

Rather than bypass trees till they get taller, the Coop plans on cutting the brush while it is small. The right-of-way easements allow the removal of all brush and trees 20 feet wide, as well as leaning or dangerous trees.

“It is imperative the Coop do everything possible to keep electric rates from increasing,” said Coop general manager Jerry Williams. “Bidding out specific sections of right-a-way clearing will help insure we get the biggest bang for the buck.”

People passing by the work area may notice a green or blue color on the ground. The color is a harmless tracking dye, because the contractors will be treating the stumps and the cut stems to prevent future growth.
