McCoy’s team wins Day 1 Davis tourney

Published June 8, 2009

After missing out on a championship last year, McCoy’s Building Supply team returned to prominence in Sunday’s round of the 18th annual J.T. Davis Golf Tournament at Paris Golf and Country Club.

The team, which consisted of Scott Bane, Joe Curtis, David Brown, Chip Jenkins, Cade Stone and Wade White, claimed the lowest gross score trophy in Sunday’s tournament with a score of 53.

McCoy’s Building Supply was denied a first place finish after the Monday tournament, the one the team had registered for, was rained out last year. But the squad resumed its first-place form this year.

Prior to last year’s rain-out, McCoy’s Building Supply team had finished in first place the previous three years.

It was Jenkins’ eighth time to be a member of a winning Davis tournament team, and it was the fifth time for Stone to help a team win a Davis tournament.

Dairy Queen’s team of Garry Davis, Brent Davis, Alan Morris, Monty Nowell, Larry Olsen and John Parker shot a 54 to finish with the second-place gross score.

Liberty National Bank’s team staked claim to the low net trophy. That team was composed of Carl Cecil, Richard Cobb, Bill Coleman, Gary Ensey, Greg Ensey and David Thrasher. Those six men recorded a net score of 42. This marks the third consecutive year for the Liberty National Bank group to claim the low net trophy.

That composite score bettered the score of 43, which was shot by the Class of 1968 No. 2 team. The six players in that group were Dick Amis, John Biard, Gary Biggers, Curtis Fendley, Joe Bob Margraves and John McGee.

Liberty’s 54 gross score was good enough to put it in a three-way tie for second with the Dairy Queen and Paris Imaging Centers teams.

The Davis Tournament is one of the major fundraisers for the Paris Education Foundation, which has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating Paris High students. The tournament is named after former Paris High golf coach J.T. Davis, who guided the Paris Wildcats to five state titles, nine regional titles and 15 district championships in 24 years before retiring in 1998.

Davis was on hand for Sunday’s golfing and mingled with the golfers during the Paris Ford/Lincoln/Mercury reception, which was held in the country club after the golfers completed their 18 holes of competition.

Day two of the tournament will be played today at 1 p.m. with 18 new teams.
