Charity sale at Belk slated for Nov. 7

Published November 1, 2009

Local clothing retailer Belk will hold its Fall Charity Sale on Saturday, Nov. 7. The sale benefits local charities, schools and non-profit organizations throughout the company’s 16-state market area.

The Paris branch has participated in the charity day sales since fall 2007. The events are held twice a year, in the spring and fall.

“We prepare for this event all year long,” store manager Kim Steed said. “As soon as the spring charity event ends, we start promoting the fall charity event due to the constant requests for donations.”

The store works with local charities, who take part by selling admission tickets for a $5 donation. Proceeds from the tickets sales are retained by the charity.

Organizations participating in the Fall Charity Sale are Newcomers, Children’s Advocacy Center, CrimeStoppers, Paris High School Basketball, Deport Masonic Lodge, Women of Word, Kiamichi Tech School, Pathway Church of God and Shoals Baptist Church. Tickets went on sale Oct. 30 and will also be sold at Belk, with donations equally divided among the participating charities and schools.

“We have had good a response from the community, with anywhere from 10 to 25 organizations participating,” Steed said. “They really appreciate being able to utilize a name like Belk to help them raise money due to the difficulty in fund raising.”

Local charities can raise anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 by participating in this event. Belk also offers prize drawings, with one of the local participating charities winning $1,000 through a drawing in the Western Division in the past.

“Constantly we are asked to donate to organizations for various reasons and it is very difficult to determine who to donate too. So, Belk offers charity day to help the non-profits raise money,” Steed said.

The day of the sale, members of the participating charities are on hand to assist in greeting customers, selling the tickets at the door and package carry out.

“I am very grateful to be a part of this community and the fine people who are dedicated to making Paris one of the best places to live and always trying to help others,” Steed said.

Customers who participate in the Belk Charity Day Sale receive merchandise discounts in addition to $5 off their first purchase of $5 or more at the event. Customers can also register to win one of three $1,000 Belk shopping sprees, and the participating charities and schools are automatically registered to win one of three $1,000 donations from Belk.

The Fall Charity Sale takes place from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.
