Hugo, Honey Grove, Detroit fall

Published November 1, 2009

BRISTOW, Okla. — The Bristow Pirates kept their playoff hopes alive, but they ended Hugo’s postseason dreams Friday night with a 21-0 shutout in District 3A-4 action.

“We’re out of the playoff picture. We’re just going to try and finish strong and do the best we can,” Hugo coach Daryl Williamson said after the loss. Hugo (4-5, 2-4) hosts Checotah (7-2, 4-2) on Friday to close out the regular season.

“Bristow a good football team, but if we had played our best game it would have been closer than 21-0. but they definitely deserve to go to playoffs,” Williamson said.

Hugo lost more than the game on Friday, as leading tackler Tyler Loflin suffered an injury on offense. He was running a shuffle pass after a 25-yard gain when he suffered the injury.

“He’s going to have an MRI on Monday,” said Williamson of Loflin.

Buffaloes linebacker Lee Wolfe had 18 tackles and David Carlile had 14 in Friday’s game.

Maud blows past Eagles

DETROIT — The mistakes started early and multiplied quickly for the Detroit Eagles on Friday.

Detroit fumbled the ball on its opening possession and suffered from turnovers and penalties for the rest of the game, as the Eagles fell to the Maud Cardinals by a score of 40-14 in a District 17-A contest.

The playoff hopes of Detroit (2-7, 2-2) rest on Friday’s road game against James Bowie (5-4, 2-2). The winning team will advance to the playoffs as the district’s third-place team, while the losing team’s season will end.

The Eagles received the football to begin Friday’s game against Maud (6-3, 4-0). They fumbled on that drive, and the Cardinals moved the ball down the field. They eventually found the end zone on the drive and converted a two-point conversion to claim an early 8-0 advantage.

Detroit responded later in the quarter with a two-yard run by senior Deon Patt, which was set up by a 49-yard pass from Kenton Tucker to Anthony Eddins. The two-point conversion failed, so Maud’s lead was closed to 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.

That lead was busted open in the second quarter, a quarter Detroit head coach Stuart Proctor described as “plagued with turnovers and penalties.” Maud scored four touchdowns during the stanza and held a 34-6 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals extended the lead to 40-6 in the third quarter after they tacked on another touchdown.

Detroit found the end zone on one occasion in the second half, as Patt scored on his second two-yard touchdown run of the night. The two-point conversion was run into the end zone by Tucker.

The Eagles committed nine penalties in the game for 75 yards. They also fumbled twice and threw two interceptions.

“We came out and turned the ball over too much,” Proctor said. “We made costly mistakes. They jumped on it and took advantage of our turnovers and penalties and got us in situations we’re not used to.”

Patt had nine carries for 34 yards and two touchdowns for Detroit. Cray Dickerson had 11 carries for 40 yards. Tucker completed 3 of 8 passes for 84 yards.

Tucker and Kameron Cashion led the Eagles in tackles with six apiece.

Whitewright edges Honey Grove in low-scoring game

WHITEWRIGHT — Points were at a premium in Friday’s game between the Honey Grove Warriors and Whitewright Tigers.

It was the Warriors who needed a few more points at the end, as they fell to the Tigers by a meager score of 6-3.

Whitewright kicker Tim Dilworth booted a 32-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead.

That turned out to be the only points they would need, as neither team could muster any additional points in the second half of the game.
