Grand jury indicts former city secretary

Published March 16, 2008

Former Reno city secretary Diana Steelman was indicted Thursday by a Lamar County Grand jury for theft of property more than $20,000 but less than $100,000 and abuse of official capacity.

Investigation still is continuing in the case, but the indictment stems from two checks, each totaling $20,000, allegedly written by Steelman.

She resigned from the city clerk job shortly before being arrested March 7 on the charges.

Texas Rangers and Reno Police Department are involved in the investigation.

Reno Police Chief Jess Wilson said there is a good chance the city can recoup the missing $40,000 without it costing the taxpayers.

In addition to her city secretary job, Steelman had been handling most of the duties of former city administrator Shannon Barrentine, whose contract with the city was not renewed by the city council.

The grand jury also indicted Lemuria Tafawn McKnight for robbery.

McKnight allegedly attacked and robbed a Paris woman earlier this month.

He was identified through a photo lineup by a witness, who told police the suspect had tattoos.

Police pulled photos of possible suspects who had tattoos. The witness identified McKnight in the photo lineup.
