Take the extra steps to keep children safe

Published October 29, 2009

Halloween is often one of the most exciting evenings of the year for area youth, but following some basic, common-sense tips can make sure the holiday is a safe one as well.

Before heading out to trick or treat, making sure a child has a safe costume is a must.

Common costume issues can be avoided by making sure a child’s costume material is flame resistant and short enough to prevent tripping or falling. Well-fitting, sturdy shoes can keep accidents at a minimum — and keep sore feet at bay as well. Masks, scarves or other pieces of a costume worn on the head need to be secured so that the child’s vision is not obscured. Cosmetics are a good, safe alternative to masks, as well.

With a safe costume on, it’s time for youth to hit the streets in search of a sugar high. With parental supervision for younger children and a well-thought-out gameplan for older children, door-to-door trick or treating is safe and fun.

A flashlight and a cell phone are two good tools to have along when trick or treating in case of problems. Especially for an older child trick or treating without an adult, these items are smart to take along. A planned route and ending time is also a good idea to plan out with youth unaccompanied by an adult.

Houses with no porch light turned on are customarily residents choosing not to participate in the Halloween holiday and should be avoided.

Above all, in the haste to go from house to house in a candy search, children need to be specially aware of cars travelling through the neighborhoods. A high-visibility costume or reflectors placed on costumes can go a long way toward helping drivers see a child.
